There is a strange unfairness built into long flights. Travel west across several time zones and you feel a bit off for a day, maybe two. Travel the same distance east and the fog can hang over you for the better part of a week. Frequent flyers know it in their bones and often blame the airline, the food, or bad luck. The real reason has nothing to do with any of that. It is written into the clock inside your own body.
Every person carries an internal clock, tucked in a small cluster of cells in the brain. This clock governs when you feel sleepy, when you feel alert, and when your body wants to eat. Left alone in a lab with no sunlight or schedule, that clock does not run on a tidy twenty-four-hour cycle. For most people it runs a little long, closer to twenty-four and a quarter hours. That small quirk is the key to the whole mystery. Your body would naturally drift toward a slightly longer day if nothing corrected it.
Because your clock leans long, stretching a day is easy and shrinking one is hard. Flying west stretches your day. Knowing the direction gives you a plan. Before a trip east, try shifting your bedtime earlier by a little each night for a few days. Seek out bright morning light once you arrive and go easy on afternoon naps. Before a trip west, do the reverse and let yourself stay up later, chasing evening light. Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol near your flight helps as well, since both disturb the sleep you are trying to rebuild. None of it erases jet lag, but it can shave days off the worst of it.
There is a rough rule that captures the whole thing. Your body recovers at a pace of about one time zone per day. Cross six zones and you may need close to a week to feel fully normal, especially heading east. The math is only a guide, and people vary quite a bit from one another. Age, sleep habits, and how much light you get all shift the timeline. Still, the direction of travel remains the single biggest factor most people ignore.
So the next time an eastbound trip leaves you wrecked while a friend breezes through a westbound one, you are not imagining it. The gap is real, and it starts with a clock that quietly prefers a longer day. Understanding that one fact turns jet lag from a mystery into a problem you can plan around. You cannot rewrite your biology, but you can work with it instead of against it. Pack the light, the timing, and a little patience. Your body will catch up, just faster in one direction than the other.
