Boarding a plane can feel like watching paint dry while standing up. The line creeps forward, stops, and creeps again, and somehow a few hundred people take forever to sit down. If you have ever wondered why it drags, you are not alone. Researchers have actually studied this, running experiments and computer models to find the slow points. What they found is that the usual boarding process is close to the worst option available. The airline is often doing it in one of the least efficient ways possible.

The heart of the problem is the aisle. A single aisle plane has one narrow lane, and only one person can really use a given stretch of it at a time. When a passenger stops to load a bag into the overhead bin, everyone behind them stops too. That one stalled traveler becomes a cork in the bottle. The number of people is not really the issue, since a full plane can load quickly if the flow is right. The issue is how often the aisle gets blocked.

Most airlines board in groups, often roughly back to front, which sounds orderly but backfires. Calling the rear rows first packs a cluster of people into the same section at the same time. They all reach for the same bins and block the same stretch of aisle at once. Everyone waits while that knot slowly untangles, and then the next group creates a new knot. In experiments, this block by block approach turned out to be the slowest method tested. One study clocked it at nearly twenty five minutes for a single boarding.

An astrophysicist named Jason Steffen decided to work out a better way using math. His optimized method spreads people out so that many can stow bags at the same time instead of one after another. Passengers board in a specific order, filling window seats first and stepping through the plane so that neighbors in line are actually several rows apart. In tests, the Steffen method was roughly twice as fast as the standard back to front approach. It even beat boarding people completely at random, which itself beats back to front. The trick is keeping the aisle busy in many places instead of jammed in one.

The full Steffen order is a hard sell in a real terminal, but simpler versions help. One is called WILMA, short for window, middle, aisle. You board all the window seats first, then all the middle seats, then all the aisle seats. That way people are not climbing over each other, which removes a big source of delay. Studies find this is much faster than the usual zone system. It captures most of the benefit without demanding a perfectly sorted line.

If faster methods exist, the obvious question is why airlines ignore them. A lot of it comes down to money rather than speed. Boarding order has become a perk that airlines sell and reward. Passengers who buy premium seats, hold elite status, or carry a branded credit card get to board early, and that early access is part of what they paid for. A pure window to aisle system would scramble those groups and undercut the value of the perk. Speed loses to revenue.

There are human reasons too, not just financial ones. Families with small children usually need to board together, and couples resist being split across the plane. A strict seat by seat order also assumes everyone lines up perfectly and stows bags at the same pace, which rarely happens. People show up late, wander to the wrong row, and force oversized bags into full bins. Real crowds are messier than a tidy model. Airlines tend to favor systems that survive that mess, even if they are slower.

So the next time you are stuck in the jet bridge, know that the delay is mostly a design choice. The science on faster boarding has existed for years and is not really in dispute. The aisle is the bottleneck, and spreading people out clears it. Airlines simply have reasons, mostly about money and comfort, to keep doing it the slow way. A quicker gate is possible, but it would cost them something they would rather sell. Until that changes, the shuffle is here to stay.
