The dimming, the shades, and the seatbelt reminders are habits built from decades of studying rare accidents. Crews run the same steps every single flight so the actions are automatic if they are ever needed. Practice on a calm night is what makes a response fast on a bad one. Routine is the whole point.
There is a hard number behind all of this preparation. Before an airliner can carry passengers, the maker has to prove the full plane can be emptied in ninety seconds. That test is run with half of the exits blocked, to mimic a real emergency where some doors cannot be used. Ninety seconds is not much time to move a few hundred people out of a crowded cabin. Every habit the crew drills, from dim lights to clear aisles, exists to protect that narrow window. A passenger who can see, move, and reach an exit without fumbling is the whole goal. Shave a few seconds off the confusion and you may save lives. That is why these small steps are treated so seriously.
