Around mile 20 of a marathon, something changes for a lot of runners. The legs turn heavy, the pace falls apart, and the finish line suddenly feels impossibly far. Runners call it hitting the wall, or bonking. It can arrive fast, almost like a switch flips. One mile you feel strong, the next you can barely lift your knees. The strange part is that it is not mainly about willpower. It is about fuel.

Your body runs on two main fuels during exercise. One is carbohydrate, stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. The other is fat, carried in far larger amounts even on lean bodies. Glycogen is the fast fuel, the one your body reaches for when you push the pace. Fat is the slow fuel, steady but harder to burn quickly. During a hard run your body leans heavily on glycogen. That is where the trouble starts.

The tank for glycogen is small. A trained runner stores somewhere around 1,800 to 2,000 calories of it. A full marathon can burn well past 2,600 calories depending on body size and pace. Do the simple math and the numbers do not add up. Somewhere around mile 18 to 20, the glycogen runs low. When it does, the body is forced to lean on fat alone, and fat cannot fire fast enough to hold race pace. That gap between demand and supply is the wall.

The feeling is unmistakable once it hits. The legs go from tired to leaden. The pace you held for hours slips away no matter how hard you try. Your mood can crash, and clear thinking gets foggy. That fog is not random, because the brain also runs on glucose and feels the shortage. Some runners get dizzy, cold, or shaky. The body is basically rationing what little fast fuel is left.

Fat is the reason you do not simply drop where you stand. It is a huge reserve, enough to power days of easy movement. The catch is that burning fat takes more oxygen and more time. It works fine at an easy jog and falls short at race effort. So the runner who hits the wall can often keep shuffling forward, just far slower than before. The engine did not quit. It downshifted to the only gear it had left.

The good news is that the wall can be pushed back. Carbohydrate loading in the days before a race tops off glycogen stores. Eating during the race helps even more, since a steady trickle of carbs keeps the tank from draining as fast. Many runners take in roughly 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour through gels, chews, or sports drinks. Timing matters, because eating early beats waiting until you already feel empty. Water and steady pacing round out the plan.

Training changes the engine itself. Long, slow runs teach the body to burn a larger share of fat at a given pace, which spares precious glycogen. Over months, the same effort costs less stored sugar than it used to. Smart pacing helps just as much, since going out too fast burns glycogen early and locks in a hard finish. Runners who start controlled often pass the ones who started fast. The wall rewards patience more than pride.

So the wall is real, and it is physical, not a sign of weakness. It is your body running low on its fast fuel and switching to a slower one. Knowing that changes how you prepare. You fuel before, you fuel during, and you pace so the tank lasts. You train your body to stretch what it has over the miles. Beat the fuel problem and the wall gets a lot smaller.
