Home teams win more than they lose, and they have for as long as anyone has kept records. The size of the edge varies by sport, with pro basketball historically around 60 percent, football closer to 57, and baseball near 54. The usual explanations get repeated so often that they stopped being questioned. Familiar surroundings, no travel, sleeping in your own bed, the crowd lifting the home side and rattling the visitors. Those explanations sound obvious. The edge itself is real and measurable, so the question was never whether it exists. When researchers tested the explanations one at a time, most of them came apart.

Start with travel. If fatigue drove the effect, you would expect the advantage to scale with distance, and it mostly does not. Teams flying across the country do slightly worse than teams driving an hour, but the difference is small next to the total home edge. Body clocks matter a little, especially for clubs crossing time zones in the harder direction. Football teams travel the least of the three sports and sit in the middle of the range anyway. Familiarity fares no better as an explanation. Baseball parks differ from each other more than any other major sport's venues do, yet baseball has the smallest home advantage of the big three. If knowing your own field mattered most, that ranking would be reversed.

Crowd noise looked like the strongest candidate until people checked what it actually changes. In basketball, home free throw shooting is close to identical to road free throw shooting, which is strange if a hostile arena rattles shooters. A free throw is the same eighteen inches of rim in every building, and the numbers say players treat it that way. The same holds for other skills performed in isolation. What does move with the crowd is the whistle. Tobias Moskowitz and Jon Wertheim laid this argument out in their 2011 book Scorecasting, working through sport after sport and landing on officiating as the common thread. The crowd matters, but it works on the people in stripes rather than the people in uniforms.

The soccer evidence is the cleanest. Economists Luis Garicano, Ignacio Palacios Huerta, and Canice Prendergast studied Spanish league matches and found referees added more stoppage time when the home side trailed by a goal and less when the home side led by a goal. The rule for stoppage time is discretionary, which is exactly why it reveals bias. Nobody has to make a bad call for that pattern to appear, only a slightly generous one, repeatedly, in the same direction. Studies of yellow cards and fouls across European leagues found similar tilts. The referees in these studies were never accused of favoring anyone, and most likely believed they were calling it straight. Small thumbs on small scales add up across a season.

Baseball offered a natural experiment when pitch tracking arrived. Analyses of tracked ball and strike calls found home pitchers got slightly more favorable borderline calls, and that the tilt grew in high pressure counts, which is when a crowd is loudest. As electronic review and evaluation of umpires expanded, that gap narrowed. That is the shape you would expect if crowd pressure was the cause and monitoring was the cure. The tilt was tiny in any single at bat and large across a season of them. Umpires were not cheating. They were people making split second judgment calls while forty thousand people screamed for one answer.

Then the pandemic ran the experiment nobody could have designed. In 2020 and 2021, European leagues played long stretches in empty stadiums with the same travel, the same fields, and the same rosters. Home advantage fell. More telling, the foul and card gap between home and away sides narrowed sharply in several leagues that were studied. Everything except the crowd stayed constant, and the officiating disparity moved. Several research groups reached the same conclusion working from different leagues and different seasons. That is about as close to a controlled test as team sports will ever produce.

None of this means home advantage is fake or that fans do not matter. It means the mechanism runs through the officials rather than through inspired play, and the practical implications follow from that. It explains why home advantage has shrunk in leagues that added replay, centralized review, and public grading of officials. It explains why the effect is largest in sports with the most discretionary calls and smallest in sports where outcomes are measured rather than judged. And it reframes what a home crowd is doing. Not lifting the team so much as leaning on the one group of people on the field who are supposed to be neutral, and who are human enough not to be. Fans still change games. Just not in the way the broadcast tells you they do.
