SPF is a ratio, not a strength rating. It answers one question: how much longer would skin covered in this product take to turn red compared to bare skin. An SPF of 30 means it would take thirty times as long under lab conditions. That framing matters because it points at a single outcome, which is sunburn, and sunburn comes almost entirely from one slice of ultraviolet light. The number is generated in a lab with a fixed, generous layer of product applied to test subjects. Everything that goes wrong in real life happens in the gap between that layer and yours. The bottle is telling the truth about a test you are not running.
The scale is also not linear, and this is where most people misread the bottle. SPF 15 blocks roughly 93 percent of burning rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent. SPF 50 blocks about 98 percent. Going from 30 to 50 is not a near doubling of protection, it is a gain of about one percentage point, even though the number on the front looks twice as impressive. Very high numbers above 50 add so little that regulators in several countries cap what can be printed. The real argument for a higher number is not the ceiling. It is that a higher number leaves more room for error when you apply too little, which nearly everyone does.
SPF also says nothing about a whole category of damage. Ultraviolet B is the burning wavelength that SPF measures. Ultraviolet A penetrates deeper, does not reliably burn, and drives most of the collagen breakdown, sagging, and pigment change people associate with sun aged skin. UVA also passes through window glass, which is why one arm ages faster in people who drive a lot. The phrase to look for on the label is broad spectrum, which means the product was tested against UVA as well. A high SPF with no broad spectrum claim is guarding one thing and leaving the other wide open. If the label does not say it, assume it was not tested for it.
Then there is the amount. The lab standard is two milligrams per square centimeter of skin, which works out to roughly a shot glass of product for an adult body and about a quarter teaspoon for the face and neck. Studies of real use find most people apply somewhere between a quarter and a half of that. Protection does not fall in a straight line with the shortfall, it falls faster, so applying half of an SPF 50 does not leave you with SPF 25. A simple field method is the two finger rule for the face, meaning a line of product along the length of your index and middle fingers. It looks like too much, and it is the right amount. Most people who feel let down by a sunscreen were under dosing it, not wearing a bad one.
Water resistance has a precise meaning that the label spells out. Nothing sold in the United States can be called waterproof or sweatproof anymore, because neither claim survived testing. What remains is water resistant for 40 minutes or 80 minutes, and those numbers come from timed immersion tests. After that window, the film has thinned enough that the rating no longer holds. Toweling off ends it early regardless of the clock. The two hour rule for putting more on applies even on dry land, since sweat, rubbing, and normal wear break down the layer. Set a timer if you are out all day.
Filters come in two families, and both work. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit largely on the surface, start working immediately, and rarely irritate sensitive skin, though they can leave a cast on deeper skin tones. Chemical sunscreens use compounds like avobenzone, octisalate, and homosalate, absorb into the top layer, and tend to feel lighter and disappear more cleanly. Newer formulas blend the two or use tinted mineral filters with iron oxides, which also help against visible light and the pigment changes that come with melasma. Cost tells you very little about performance here. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually put on every day, in the right amount.
A few practical details close the gap. Sunscreen expires, usually three years from manufacture, and a bottle left in a hot car degrades faster than the date suggests. The spots people miss are consistent: ears, the back of the neck, the scalp part line, the tops of the feet, the back of the hands, and the strip under the jaw. Spray products are convenient and easy to underapply, so spray until skin is visibly wet and then rub it in. Clothing with a UPF rating does a job no lotion can match and never needs reapplying. And shade between late morning and mid afternoon still outperforms every product on the shelf.
