Every treadmill in America runs the same arithmetic. Take two hundred twenty, subtract your age, and the screen calls that your maximum heart rate. From there it paints your zones, tells you when you are working hard, and tells you when to back off. It is printed on gym walls and built into watches that cost more than a month of coaching. It is also one of the shakiest numbers in fitness. The people who built it never claimed otherwise.
The formula traces back to a 1971 paper by Fox, Naughton, and Haskell. They were reviewing existing work, not running a new study, and they pulled together roughly a dozen references with mixed methods and small samples. Out of that came a rough line that fit the scatter well enough for a chart. The authors presented it as a convenience, not a law. Later writers stripped away the caution and kept the number. That is how a rule of thumb from a review paper became the default setting on millions of machines.
In 2001 a team led by Hirofumi Tanaka went back and did the work properly. They pooled 351 studies covering more than eighteen thousand subjects, then ran a lab validation on top of it. Their line came out as two hundred eight minus seven tenths of your age. A 2007 analysis by Gellish and colleagues, tracking the same people over many years, landed close to the same place. The newer equations agree with each other and disagree with the old one in a predictable direction. Below about forty, the old formula runs high. Above about forty, it runs low.
Now for the part that matters more than which equation you pick. Any age based prediction carries a standard deviation of roughly ten to twelve beats per minute. That is not a rounding error. It means two healthy forty year olds with identical predicted maximums can have real maximums twenty five beats apart. One of them will be gasping at a heart rate the other holds through a conversation. The formula is describing a crowd. You are not a crowd. You are one person standing on one treadmill.
Ten beats sounds small until you see what it does to your zones. Training zones are set as percentages of maximum, and the bands are narrow, often ten to fifteen beats wide. Shift the ceiling and every band underneath it slides with you. A person whose true maximum is twelve beats higher than predicted will spend easy sessions at a genuinely easy effort while their watch scolds them for going too hard. A person whose true maximum is lower will grind through what the screen calls moderate work and wonder why they never recover. The prescription was fine. The reference point was wrong. That error compounds over a training block. Weeks of easy days that were never easy leave you flat.
There is a second problem nobody mentions. Maximum heart rate is not a fitness score, and it does not go up when you get stronger. It is mostly set by age and by the way your own heart behaves, and it drifts down slowly over the years no matter how well you train. A trained runner and an untrained neighbor of the same age often share a similar maximum. What separates them is how much blood moves per beat and how fast the rate settles after work. Chasing a higher maximum is chasing a number that fitness does not move. Watch recovery instead. That one does respond to training.
So what should you use instead. The honest answer is your own effort, read directly. The talk test is crude and it works. If you can speak in full sentences, you are in the easy band. If you can manage short phrases, you are in the middle. If you can only get out a word, you are near the top. Rate of perceived exertion on a one to ten scale tracks lab measures well enough for almost everyone training without a coach. Use the watch to record what happened, not to decide what should happen.
If you want a real number, get one measured. A graded exercise test at a clinic or a university lab will give you an actual maximum instead of a prediction, and a well run field test can get close for a fraction of the cost. Either option beats arithmetic that was never meant to carry this much weight. Short of that, take the formula for what it is, a starting guess with a wide margin, and let your own body correct it over the first few weeks. The machine is not lying to you on purpose. It is just quoting a fifty year old estimate as if it were a fact about you. Correct for that and train on what you feel.
