Almost everyone can recite it from memory. Normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37 in Celsius, and anything above that means something is off. That single number is printed on charts, taught in schools, and treated as a fixed law of the human body. The trouble is that it was never quite true, and it is even less true now. The figure traces back to one German physician in the 1850s named Carl Wunderlich. He took millions of readings from thousands of patients using a foot-long thermometer tucked under the arm. His work was careful for its time, but it locked in a single average that we have repeated for more than a century.
Modern researchers went back and checked that famous number with much better tools. A large study out of Stanford, published in 2020, looked at temperature records stretching across nearly two hundred years. They found that the true average today sits closer to 97.9 degrees, and for many people it runs lower still. Even more striking, the data showed that human body temperature has slowly fallen over generations. Men born in the early 1800s ran warmer than men born in the 1990s by a real, measurable margin. The same downward drift showed up in the readings for women across the decades. The old 98.6 standard is less a fact about your body and more a snapshot of a different century.
Part of the answer is that your temperature was never one fixed point to begin with. It moves in a daily rhythm that can swing by a full degree or more from morning to night. Your reading is at its lowest in the early morning hours, usually a few hours before you wake up. It climbs through the day and peaks in the late afternoon and early evening. That means the same healthy person can read 97 at dawn and near 99 after dinner without anything being wrong. Where you measure matters just as much as when you measure it.
The spot you take the reading from changes the number in ways most people never account for. None of this means your thermometer is broken. It means the single magic number was always an average built from very different bodies.
Researchers have floated a few theories for why we have cooled off as a species over the years. One leading idea points to a drop in low-grade inflammation across the population. Better sanitation, cleaner water, and fewer chronic infections mean the average body is not fighting hidden battles the way it once did. Fighting infection raises your metabolic rate, and a steady baseline of it would keep your resting temperature a little higher. Heating and cooling in homes may also play a part, since bodies expend less energy holding a steady temperature. The exact cause is still debated, but the trend itself is clear in the numbers.
So what should you actually do with all of this. The most useful move is to learn your own normal instead of trusting the printed standard. Take your temperature a few times when you feel fine, at different points in the day, using the same thermometer. Write down what you see so you know your true baseline before you ever feel sick. Then a fever is not a fixed threshold everyone shares but a meaningful jump above your personal normal. For many people, the clinical line for fever is around 100.4 degrees, but the story your own body tells is more precise.
This is not a reason to ignore a thermometer or brush off feeling unwell. It is a reason to read the number with more context than a single memorized figure allows. A reading of 98.6 might be slightly elevated for someone who normally sits at 97.5. A reading of 99 in the evening might be completely ordinary. Knowing your baseline, the time of day, and the method turns a vague number into real information. The body is not a machine with one setting stamped on it. It is a living system that keeps its own rhythm, and it pays to know yours.
