Your body runs on a system of pipes you never see. They carry blood to every inch of you, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. When you are cold, your body pulls blood away from your skin to keep your core warm. That is why your hands and feet get cold first on a winter day. The vessels can widen or shrink to send flow where it is needed most. It is a quiet system that shifts all day without you asking.

The system can also fix itself when it springs a leak. When you get a cut, the vessels near it tighten to slow the loss of blood. Tiny bits in your blood rush to the spot and clump together to plug the hole. A scab forms on top while new tissue grows under it. Over time the body can even build fresh vessels to route around a blocked one. This is how a bruise heals and fades from dark to yellow to gone. Your pipes are not just tubes; they are alive and always at work.

Because the system is so large, how you treat it matters a lot. High blood pressure wears on the vessel walls over years and makes them stiff. Too much sugar in the blood can harm the tiny ones, which is why hard cases of diabetes can hurt the eyes and feet. Smoke narrows them and cuts the flow to your body. Moving your body, eating well, and keeping stress in check all help keep the pipes clear. You cannot see this network, but you can protect it every day. Sixty thousand miles is a lot to look after.

It is easy to forget what is going on under your skin every second. Right now, blood is racing through miles of you without a single sound. Each beat sends it out and pulls it back in a loop that never stops. The scale of it is hard to picture, but the point is simple. You are built with more plumbing than most whole cities.
