You pay for 300 megabits per second. The ad promised speed, the box in your living room blinks with confidence, and yet a single movie still takes longer to download than you expected. It is easy to assume the company is lying or the connection is broken. Most of the time neither is true. The gap between the number you bought and the speed you feel comes down to a units problem, plus a few weak links you never see. Once you understand both, the slowness stops feeling like a mystery. It starts looking like plain arithmetic instead.
Start with the units, because this is where most of the confusion lives. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second, written with a lowercase b. The files you download are measured in megabytes, written with a capital B. Those two words look almost identical, but a byte is eight times larger than a bit. That means you divide the plan number by eight to find how many megabytes you can pull down each second. Nobody at the sales desk mentions this, and the marketing leans on the bigger-sounding number on purpose. The eight-to-one gap is baked right into the pitch.
Run your plan through that math and the picture clears up fast. Take 300 megabits per second and divide by eight, and you get about 37.5 megabytes per second. So a one-gigabyte file, which is roughly a thousand megabytes, needs around 27 seconds at full speed. That is the best case the plan can ever deliver, not a promise for every download. If a two-hour movie runs several gigabytes, you are looking at a couple of minutes even when everything goes right. The number on your bill was never the number you would watch on the screen. It was the ceiling, quietly measured in the smaller unit.
Now take that 37.5 and shave it down, because real conditions never reach the ceiling. Some of your speed goes to overhead, the digital packaging that wraps every piece of data so it arrives in order and intact. Your plan is also shared across every phone, television, and laptop in the house at the same time. Most ads attach the words up to before the speed, which is a polite way of saying this is the most you might get. Weather, wiring, and how many neighbors are streaming can all nudge the number lower. None of this is a defect in your service. It is the difference between a lab measurement and a Tuesday night at home.
The biggest hidden drag is usually your own Wi-Fi. A wireless signal weakens with every wall, floor, and closed door it passes through. Distance from the router matters, and so do microwaves, baby monitors, and a dozen neighboring networks fighting for the same air. A laptop three rooms away might see a fraction of what the plan can deliver, even though the connection into the house is fine. Plugging a device straight into the router with a cable often doubles the speed you measure. If your download crawls, the problem is frequently the last few feet, not the miles of fiber outside. That is the part people almost never stop to test.
Then there is the other end of the line. Every download comes from a server somewhere, and that server has its own limit on how fast it can send. If a popular site is flooded with visitors, it may hand your device a slow trickle no matter how big your plan is. A download is only as quick as the slowest link in the whole chain, and that link is often far from your home. Your connection can sit there ready to move at full speed while the source drips data out slowly. This is why the same file can fly one hour and stall the next. You are sharing that distant server with the rest of the internet.
So what do you actually do with all this. First, use the divide-by-eight rule to set honest expectations before you blame anyone. Second, test a download over a cable and then over Wi-Fi, since the gap tells you whether the router or the plan is the weak point. Third, remember that a slow single download often says more about the server than your service. Upgrading to a bigger plan will not fix a weak wireless signal or a crowded website. The fastest connection in the world still bows to the slowest link in front of it. Knowing where that link sits saves you money and a lot of pointless frustration.
