Car safety feels like it should be neutral. A crash test is a crash test, and a five star rating should mean the car protects whoever is inside. For decades, though, the tool at the center of those tests has been built around one kind of body. The standard crash-test dummy is modeled on an average man. That choice, made long ago and slow to change, helps explain a gap that shows up in real crashes. Women are more likely to be hurt, and the way cars are tested is part of the reason.
The main dummy used in safety testing traces back to the 1970s. It was designed to represent a middle sized man, standing around 5 feet 9 inches and weighing about 171 pounds. That figure became the default, the body that new cars were built and tested to protect. For a long time there was no widely used dummy meant to represent an average woman at all. Engineers had a stand in for the average man and treated it as the stand in for everyone. The result was a safety system tuned to one build.
There is a so called female dummy, but its story reveals the problem. For years the female version used in testing was essentially a smaller copy of the male dummy. It represents a very small woman, close to 4 feet 11 inches and about 108 pounds, near the fifth percentile for women. That is far from the size of an average woman. On top of that, the smaller dummy was often placed in the passenger seat rather than behind the wheel. So the driver being protected in most tests was still, in effect, a man.
This is not just a design quirk on paper. It shows up in the injuries counted after real crashes. A federal study found that in comparable crashes, women faced about a 17 percent higher risk of death than men. Their risk of a serious but nonfatal injury ran higher still, by nearly 29 percent. Earlier research had already flagged the gap, with one study finding women far more likely to be seriously hurt in front end crashes. The numbers point to a pattern, not a coincidence.
The reasons trace back to real differences the tests long ignored. Women, on average, have different bone density, muscle distribution, and neck strength than men. They also tend to sit closer to the wheel and in a more upright position, which changes how a body moves in a crash. Those factors affect the kinds of injuries that happen, especially to the neck, chest, and lower legs. Whiplash, for instance, strikes women more often than men. A dummy built on a male frame simply does not capture those risks.
The good news is that this is finally shifting. Researchers have built a new dummy meant to represent an average woman, not a shrunken man. It accounts for differences in the spine and neck that drive many of the injuries women suffer. Safety regulators have said they are working to bring more advanced female dummies into official testing. The push has come from scientists, advocates, and lawmakers who pointed at the same data for years. The change is slow, but it is real.
It is fair to ask why it took this long. Part of the answer is inertia, since the male dummy was the standard and standards are hard to move. Building and validating a new dummy takes years of research and money. Testing rules are written into regulation, so updating them is a formal, careful process. For a long time, the gap in outcomes was not measured clearly enough to force the issue. Once the data was laid out plainly, the case for change became much harder to ignore.
The lesson reaches beyond cars. When a system is built around one group as the default, the people who do not fit that mold often pay a hidden cost. The crash-test dummy is a clear, physical example of an average that quietly left half the population out. Fixing it means testing for the range of bodies that actually use the roads. That is not a favor to one group, it is a more honest picture of who drives. Safer cars for women make cars safer for everyone.
