You walk into a friend's house and it smells like their house. Not bad, not good, just distinctly theirs. Then you go home and smell nothing at all, because your own place reads as neutral to you every single day. Somebody who visits you gets the same hit of specific scent that you got at their door. You are not missing it because your nose is weak. You are missing it because your nose is doing exactly what it was built to do.
The system is called olfactory adaptation, and it works in two places at once. At the front end, odor molecules bind to receptors on nerve cells in the tissue high inside your nose, which starts a chemical signal. When the same molecules keep arriving, that signal cascade dampens down even though the molecules are still there. Further back, the brain does its own version of the same thing, and cells in the region that processes smell reduce their response to an odor that has not changed. So the fade happens at the sensor and at the processor, and the two effects stack.
That design is not a flaw, and it is worth understanding why. A sense that kept shouting about every constant smell would be useless, because the important information in your environment is what just changed. Your body pulls the same trick with the feel of your shirt against your skin and the sound of a running fan. Smell matters most as an alarm, since it warns about smoke, spoiled food, and gas leaks, and an alarm has to be able to stand out from the background. Adaptation is what clears the background so a new odor can register against it. The barn fades so you can still smell the rose in the barn.
The catch is that adaptation is fast to set in and slow to reverse. Most people stop registering a steady household smell within a couple of minutes of walking in the door. Undoing it takes real separation from the odor, on the order of hours away rather than a quick step outside. Adaptation is also fairly specific to the odor involved, so you can go blind to your dog while still catching the neighbor's cooking through an open window. That specificity is why you cannot audit your own house by sniffing harder. There is nothing to sniff harder at, because the signal has already been turned down before it reaches you.
The everyday sources are boring, which is part of the problem. Cooking oil settles as a film on cabinet doors and the range hood, and it turns stale over weeks. Damp towels, gym bags, and laundry left in the washer overnight grow bacteria that produce a musty note. Pets deposit scent on carpet, upholstery, and the bottom half of walls where your nose never goes. Trash cans hold residue in the plastic long after the bag is out, and drains hold a film in the trap. Shoes, the entry closet, and the vacuum bag itself round out most of what a visitor picks up in the first ten seconds.
Since your nose will not help, you have to work around it rather than through it. Leave the house for a few hours, then walk back in through the front door and pay attention to the first breath before you set anything down. Ask a friend who visits rarely to tell you the truth, and tell them plainly that vague reassurance is not useful. Check the specific spots rather than the air, so smell the towels, the drain, the trash can with the bag removed, and the vacuum filter. Textiles hold odor longer than hard surfaces, which means curtains, rugs, and couch cushions deserve more attention than countertops. Wash what can be washed and open the windows before you reach for anything with a fragrance.
That last point is where most people go wrong, because covering a smell and removing one are different projects. Plug in air fresheners and candles add a new odor on top of the old one, and your nose adapts to the combination within minutes. A month later you are burning the candle out of habit while a guest smells both layers at once. Ventilation, cleaning the source, and washing fabric actually lower the amount of odor in the air, which is the only thing that changes what a visitor experiences. Fragrance has a place once the source is handled, and no place before that. Your home has a smell, everyone's does, and the only question is whether you chose it.
