Two cameras. One wide, one tight on the face. The room looks good, the guest is relaxed, the audio is clean. You roll for ninety minutes and both monitors look right the whole time. Then you drop the two angles into a timeline and start cutting between them. One shot is warm and a little orange. The other is cool and faintly blue. The cut does not read as a change of angle. It reads as a mistake, and every viewer feels it even if they cannot name it.
The cause is almost always auto white balance. That setting is a guess the camera makes about the color of the light in the room. It makes that guess from what it sees through its own lens. Your wide camera sees a window, a lamp, and half a wall. Your tight camera sees a face, a shirt, and a dark background. Two different views produce two different guesses. Neither body knows the other one is in the room, and neither one is trying to agree with anybody.
It gets worse the longer you roll. The sun moves. A cloud passes over. Someone opens a door and lets daylight into a room lit by warm bulbs. Auto white balance reads the scene again and shifts, but the two bodies rarely shift at the same moment or by the same amount. So the gap between your angles is not one steady error you can dial out once and forget. It moves while you shoot. A match that looks perfect at minute ten is wrong again by minute forty.
That is why this does not get cleaned up later. Matching color is simple when the offset holds still. You grade one angle, match it to the other, and move on with your day. Drift breaks that completely. You would have to keyframe every shift across ninety minutes of footage, which is a full day of work on a problem that took four seconds to create. Mixed light also pushes color toward green or magenta, not only warm or cool. Green on skin is far harder to pull out than a simple warm shift, and every tool you reach for to correct it costs you somewhere else in the image.
The fix costs about two minutes. Take both cameras off auto and set white balance by hand. Pick a Kelvin number and put the same number in both bodies. If you are not sure what the room is doing, hold a gray card in the key light and set a custom balance on each camera from that same spot. Shoot three seconds of that card at the top of every card. Now you have a reference you can trust and two angles that already agree before anyone says a word.
White balance is the one people notice, but it is not the only setting that has to match. If one body is recording in a flat log profile and the other is on a standard picture profile, the two will never cut together cleanly no matter what you do to the color. Frame rate and shutter have to match or the motion will feel different between angles. A big gap in ISO leaves one angle noticeably noisier than the other, and noise is far more visible on a cut than most people expect. Even lens choice matters, since two lenses can render color and contrast differently on the same body. Walk both cameras before you roll and write the settings down. Matching gear is a luxury, but matching settings is free.
Fix the light before you fix the camera. Most of this starts with a room running two colors at once. Kill the overhead fluorescents and light the subject yourself. Close the blinds, gel the window to match your lamps, or gel your lamps to match the window. Pick one color of light and commit to it for the whole shoot. A room with one color temperature gives the camera nothing to argue about. It also makes every later choice easier, from exposure to how the background falls away behind your guest.
The habit behind the fix matters more than the setting itself. Every control left on auto is a decision you handed to a machine that cannot see the finished edit. Auto exposure rides the brightness up when your guest leans forward. Auto focus hunts when a hand crosses the frame. Auto audio raises the room tone during a pause, so you hear the hiss climb under the one answer you actually needed. Lock what you can lock. Check it once before you roll and again after every break. The shoot is the only place these problems are still cheap to solve.
