Look around the room you are in and you are probably within reach of a few of them. Button batteries, the little silver coins that power remote controls, key fobs, bathroom scales, flameless candles, thermometers, and dozens of small toys. They are convenient, cheap, and everywhere, and their numbers in the average home have only grown. For an adult they are harmless. For a small child who puts one in their mouth, a single button battery can cause serious injury in a frighteningly short window. This is one of those household dangers that stays quiet until the moment it is not.
The reason these batteries are so dangerous is not what most parents assume. The threat is not mainly the chemicals leaking out. When a button battery gets stuck in a child's throat, it does something worse. Saliva completes the circuit, and the battery starts producing a caustic reaction right against the tissue. That reaction burns like a strong chemical, and it can begin to destroy the wall of the esophagus in about two hours. Left in place, it can burn through into the airway or into nearby blood vessels, which is how these cases turn tragic so quickly.
The numbers show this is not a rare freak event. Emergency room visits by children for swallowed batteries roughly doubled over a single decade. Between 2010 and 2019, a child went to a United States emergency room for a battery about once every 1.25 hours, up from once every 2.6 hours in the two decades before. That adds up to more than 70,000 visits in ten years. Some of those children died, and others were left with lasting injuries that required surgery and long recoveries. The rise tracks closely with how many everyday gadgets now run on these coin cells.
Part of what makes this so dangerous is how easily it hides. In many cases no adult sees the child swallow anything. The early symptoms then look almost exactly like a common illness. A child may drool, refuse to eat, cough, run a fever, seem congested, or grow fussy and tired. A reasonable parent sees a cold or a stomach bug and decides to wait it out at home. That delay is the enemy, because the battery keeps burning the entire time it sits in the throat. The gap between looking sick and being correctly diagnosed is exactly where the harm happens.
The danger has finally gotten some attention in the law. In 2022 the country passed a measure known as Reese's Law, named for Reese Hamsmith, an 18 month old girl who died after swallowing a button battery from a remote. The law requires that battery compartments on new products be secured, so that opening them takes a tool or two separate hand motions at once. It also requires clearer warning labels on the packaging. That helps for items bought recently. It does nothing for the older remotes, toys, and gadgets already sitting in your home, which is most of what a family owns.
If you ever suspect a child has swallowed a button battery, treat it as a true emergency and move fast. Go straight to the nearest emergency room, and do not wait to see if symptoms appear first. Tell the staff right away that it might be a battery, because that tells them to get an X ray immediately rather than work through slower possibilities. Do not try to make the child throw up. There is one more step that poison specialists now recommend, and more parents should know about it. This is a bridge measure, not a cure, and it should never replace an immediate trip to the emergency room. Walk through your home and check which devices hold coin batteries, then confirm their compartments are screwed or clicked firmly shut. Keep spare batteries in a container your child cannot open, stored up high and out of sight, and do the same with the used ones, because a battery with little charge left can still cause a burn. Toss dead batteries promptly instead of letting them roll around a drawer. A few minutes of battery proofing is a small price against an injury that moves this fast.
