There is a common belief that anyone who grew up with phones and tablets must be great with technology. The term digital native gets thrown around as if being born after a certain year comes with built in tech skill. Teachers, managers, and parents often assume the youngest person in the room is the one to ask when something breaks. The assumption feels obvious, and it is mostly wrong. Growing up around screens makes you comfortable with screens, which is not the same as understanding them. A person can spend all day on an app and still have no idea how any of it works. Comfort and skill look alike from the outside, but they are not the same thing.
The gap here is between using technology and understanding it. Using an app means you can tap through it fast, find the buttons, and get what you want. Understanding means you know what is happening underneath, so you can fix it when it breaks or bend it to a new task. Most young people are fluent users and shaky at the second part. They can run three social apps at once and still freeze when a file will not open or a printer will not connect. The polished apps they grew up with were built to hide the machinery, not teach it. Smooth design made things easy to use and easy to never understand.
One clear example is the way many young people think about files. Teachers who work with students report that the idea of folders and file paths does not click the way it once did. To a group raised on search bars, everything lives in one big pile you dig through by typing a few letters. That works until it does not, such as when a file has to be moved, named, or found without a search box. The mental model of a drive with folders inside folders is simply not there for many. It was never needed, because the apps did the sorting. This is not a knock on anyone. It is what happens when the tools hide their own structure.
The same shows up with basic fixes. An older worker who grew up with clunky machines often learned to poke around when something failed. They had to, because the early tools broke constantly and came with no help. That habit of trying settings, restarting, and reading the error built a rough sense of how the system fits together. Newer tools rarely break in the open, so there is less reason to look under the hood. When they do fail, the reflex to explore is not there, and the person waits for someone else to fix it. Reliability is a gift, but it quietly took away a school that older users did not know they attended.
Security is another place the myth falls apart. You might expect people raised online to spot scams easily, but the record does not back that up. Younger users fall for certain online cons at high rates, in part because they move fast and trust the platforms they live on. Being comfortable in an app can make you less careful, not more, since nothing there has ever felt dangerous. Knowing how to post is not the same as knowing how a fake link works. Ease breeds a kind of trust that scammers are happy to use. Familiarity is not the same as street smarts online.
This matters most when young people step into jobs. Employers often assume new hires will pick up any software on their own, so they skip real training. The new worker can send a message and join a call, but stalls on a spreadsheet formula or a shared drive. The skills that grew up with polished consumer apps do not always cross over to the plain tools of an office. That gap is not laziness or a lack of brains. It is a mismatch between what the apps taught and what the work needs. Assuming the skill is already there just leaves the gap unfixed.
None of this is a put down of a whole group. Young people learn new tools fast when someone actually shows them, and they often outpace older workers once they see the structure. The point is that the skill is taught, not born, and pretending otherwise skips the teaching. A person handed real training in files, troubleshooting, and safety picks it up quickly. The problem is the myth, which says the training is not needed because the skill came free with age. Drop that myth and the fix is simple. Teach the parts the apps hid, and the so called digital native becomes genuinely skilled.
The lesson cuts against the easy story we tell about age and technology. Being young and online all day builds comfort, speed, and a good eye for what feels right in an app. It does not build a deep grasp of how the machines work, because nothing asked for it. That grasp comes from being taught or from having to figure it out, the same as any other skill. So the next time someone hands the youngest person the broken laptop, remember what that really tests. It tests whether they were ever taught, not how old they are. Skill with technology is earned, and it was never a birthright.
