Something is happening in the relationship between children and homework that most parents are still figuring out how to describe, let alone address. Their kids are not just Googling answers. They are having conversations with AI systems that explain concepts, walk through problems step by step, offer examples, and adjust their explanations based on follow-up questions. Research published earlier this year suggests that 86 percent of students globally are already using AI in some form in their learning. For Gen Alpha, the cohort born from 2010 onward, this is not a new tool they adopted. It is the environment they grew up in. The range of parental responses is as wide as you would expect when any new technology intersects with something as loaded as children's education. Some parents have banned AI use for homework entirely, treating it the way a previous generation treated calculators before calculators became accepted tools. Others have decided that AI literacy is itself a valuable skill and are encouraging their children to use these tools while trying to instill guidelines about when and how. A significant number of parents are somewhere in the middle, uncertain about the line between a child learning with AI assistance and a child offloading their learning to a system that does the thinking for them.
The research on this has produced findings that are legitimately complicated rather than pointing in one direction. The pattern suggests a real distinction between getting through the work and actually learning the content. When AI provides the scaffold for every step of a problem, students are practicing navigating AI assistance rather than practicing the underlying skill. That difference is consequential for any subject where the underlying skill is the point, which is most of them.
The school system has not resolved this. Individual teachers are making individual calls, and the policies vary from classroom to classroom in ways that create inconsistency. Some teachers are redesigning assessments to be AI-resistant, requiring in-person demonstrations of understanding. Others are incorporating AI into coursework deliberately, treating it as a tool to learn alongside rather than to prohibit. The federal conversation about AI in schools is ongoing but has produced no national guidance that is being implemented consistently. The result is that parents and children are navigating the landscape mostly without institutional support.
The parents who seem to be handling this most effectively are the ones who are having explicit conversations with their children about what learning is actually for. That conversation, which sounds straightforward, turns out to be surprisingly productive when it is done directly rather than assumed. Kids who understand that the point of doing a math problem is to develop a thinking skill, not just to produce a correct answer, make different choices about when to reach for AI than kids who have been rewarded only for correct answers. The goal is to develop children who understand the purpose of their own education rather than children who optimize for assignments.
There is also a generational dimension to this that is worth acknowledging honestly. The kids growing up with AI as a natural part of their environment will need to know how to use these tools effectively in the workforce. Blanket restriction from AI use at home does not prepare a child for a world where the workforce operates with AI assistance as a baseline assumption. The question is less about whether to allow AI and more about how to develop the judgment to use it well and the foundational skills that make you useful even when the AI is not available.
For parents who want to engage this directly, the most useful frame is probably this: AI is a legitimate learning tool when it is helping a child understand something better, and it is a shortcut that undermines development when it is doing the learning in the child's place. Teaching kids to tell the difference between those two modes of engagement is harder than banning the tool entirely, but it is the skill that will actually serve them.
