Easter has come and gone. The sunrise services are done, the hymns have been sung, and the sanctuaries that were packed last Sunday are back to their regular size this morning. For many believers, this week carries a quiet kind of deflation after the intensity of Holy Week. The celebration is over and the ordinary continues. It is an interesting moment to talk about Thomas, because what Thomas represents in the resurrection narrative is exactly the kind of faith that lives in the space between the high moments.

The story appears in John 20. Thomas was not in the room when Jesus first appeared to the disciples after the resurrection. He heard the accounts secondhand, and his response was direct. He said he would not believe unless he could see and touch the wounds himself. The church has spent centuries describing this as failure. Thomas gets called Doubting Thomas like the doubt was the defining thing about him, the embarrassing part of his story that exists as a cautionary tale for believers who find certainty difficult. That reading is not only uncharitable, it misses what actually happens in the passage.

When Jesus appears again a week later, Thomas is present. Jesus does not rebuke him. He does not start with a correction or a lecture about the cost of unbelief. He shows Thomas the wounds directly and invites him to examine them. Thomas's response is one of the most complete confessions of faith in the entire New Testament. "My Lord and my God." Not a tentative acknowledgment. Not a qualified belief. A full declaration. The doubt did not prevent the encounter. It preceded it. Thomas's honesty about where he was got him to where he needed to be.

What this means for ordinary believers is something the church tends to under-teach. The idea that doubt is incompatible with genuine faith has kept a lot of people silent about the questions they are actually carrying. People sit in services performing certainty because the culture around them has communicated that question marks are evidence of weak faith. The result is a kind of spiritual loneliness, where the internal experience is nothing like the external presentation, and the gap between them becomes its own source of distress. Thomas's story directly contradicts that model. His honesty about uncertainty was not a problem that needed to be corrected away. It was the posture that led to one of the most direct encounters with the risen Christ recorded in the Gospels.

There is a reason this Sunday after Easter has been called Thomas Sunday in liturgical traditions that follow the church calendar closely. The placement is intentional. Holy Week and Easter are the highest intensity points of the Christian year. The week after is when the dust settles and people return to their actual lives with their actual questions. Placing Thomas's story here is a pastoral decision. It is the church saying, in its best moments, that the space after the celebration is not empty. It is exactly where honest inquiry lives, and honest inquiry has a place at the table.

This matters in 2026 in ways that are specific to what people are carrying. Financial anxiety is at near-record levels. Geopolitical uncertainty is real and visible in ways that touch daily life for many families. People who came to church last Sunday for Easter brought all of that with them into the pew. The resurrection is the church's central claim, and it is an enormous one. It asks for a lot. The fact that Thomas needed to see before he fully believed is not a mark against him in the text. It is a recognition that faith does not always arrive fully formed, especially when the claim being made is as significant as the claim Easter makes.

The phrase "have you believed because you have seen me" is often read as a mild rebuke, but the full sentence deserves its other half. Jesus continues: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." He is not shaming Thomas. He is acknowledging the particular challenge of believing without direct sensory confirmation and calling it a form of trust that carries its own honor. The blessing is for the people in every generation after that first one, the ones who did not stand in the room with Thomas and still choose to believe. Their faith is not lesser for being less certain in the moment. It is the same faith, working through the same questions, arriving at the same place by a different road.

The Sunday after Easter belongs to those people. It always has.
