Most people treated Easter Sunday as the finish line. The fast ended, the family came over, and by Monday morning things returned to normal. That is understandable given how the holiday has been culturally framed, but it completely misses what the ancient church understood about resurrection. Easter is not a day. It is a season. Fifty days long, from the morning of resurrection until Pentecost, and the tradition that gave us this structure knew something about spiritual formation that a single celebration cannot accomplish.

In 2026, Eastertide runs from April 5 through May 24. The season is called the Great Fifty Days in the oldest church traditions, and the number is deliberate. Fifty days mirrors the Mosaic calendar, where fifty days after Passover Israel celebrated the giving of the Torah. For the early church, the resurrection and the coming of the Spirit formed a coherent arc, not two separate events separated by a holiday and six normal Sundays. They lived in the resurrection season together for fifty days, which is how long it takes for something to become a practice rather than a reaction.

The structure of Eastertide is worth understanding practically. The first eight days are called the Octave of Easter, treated in Catholic and Anglican traditions as a single extended celebration of the resurrection. The liturgical color stays white, which marks feasts rather than seasons of waiting. The typical Old Testament reading in Sunday liturgy is replaced with passages from Acts, the story of how the earliest Christian communities actually lived out what they had seen. That is not an accident. The church is saying spend six weeks watching what people do when they genuinely believe the resurrection happened. Watch the lame man walk at the temple gate. Watch Stephen preach without fear. Watch Paul turn the Mediterranean world sideways. This is what it looks like.

For Christians who do not follow a liturgical calendar, the invitation here is still available. The simplest version is to treat the weeks between Easter and Pentecost as a season of deliberate attention to the risen Christ rather than checking a box and moving on. That might mean reading through Acts during these weeks, which is one of the most propulsive narratives in Scripture and takes about three hours total. It might mean praying through the Psalms that the early church specifically tied to the resurrection season, Psalm 118 being the central one, the psalm Jesus himself quoted. It might mean gathering with people to talk about what it actually changes in daily life if the resurrection is real.

That last question is the practical one. If the resurrection is true, it means death has been decisively defeated. Not managed, not scheduled for a future defeat, but defeated now, in principle and in fact. That changes how a builder thinks about failure. It changes how a parent thinks about a wayward child. It changes how an entrepreneur thinks about a collapsing business, how a worker thinks about being laid off, how anyone navigating the current economic and political environment thinks about what is ultimate. The resurrection does not solve immediate problems, but it reorders which problems are ultimate. That reordering takes more than one morning to actually absorb.

The Ascension falls on the fortieth day of Eastertide, which this year is May 14. Jesus ascending to the Father is part of the arc of the season, not a separate event. The church has always read it as the beginning of the reign of Christ over all things, not just his absence from the earth. The Spirit then comes ten days later at Pentecost, May 24, completing the promise Jesus made when he told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem. The sequence builds. Easter is the hinge. The season is the reordering of everything that follows from it.

Most of the anxiety in American Christianity right now comes from treating faith as a set of beliefs to affirm rather than a life to inhabit. Eastertide is fifty days of inhabiting. It is the church's built-in mechanism for making the resurrection something you actually live from rather than something you agree with and then set down. The season does not require a liturgical tradition to observe. It requires attention and the decision to stay in the text long enough for the text to stay in you.

Pentecost Sunday on May 24 is not a footnote to Easter. It is Easter's completion. The God who raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit who fell on 120 people in an upper room and sent them out without fear into a hostile world. Fifty days to get there. That is the whole point.
